When the Drone Gets Through: Emerging Injury Patterns in Modern Warfare

Dr. Mims will examine how the widespread use of unmanned systems is reshaping battlefield trauma. Drawing on emerging experience from the war in Ukraine, Dr. Mims will highlight evolving mechanisms of injury, including complex blast, fragmentation, burn, and combined-pattern trauma. The presentation will also explore how persistent drone threats are disrupting casualty evacuation and challenging traditional assumptions about the “Golden Hour” of trauma care.

Mark M. Mims, MD, is an Associate Professor of facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center where he specializes in advanced reconstruction of the head and neck region. He also founded Operation Ukraine at OU Health, an internationally recognized initiative that has trained Ukrainian military and civilian surgeons in advanced trauma and reconstructive surgery since 2023.

Through his work with Ukrainian surgeons caring for casualties from the current war, Dr. Mims has developed a particular interest in how drones are changing battlefield injury patterns, casualty evacuation, and the delivery of frontline medical care. Through identified operational gaps, he founded Vantorix Systems, which focuses on autonomous and remotely enabled medical technologies designed to extend lifesaving care into environments where traditional medical evacuation and medic access are delayed or impossible.
